UC cops find pot garden above campus

SFGate

Berkeley - UC Berkeley police have discovered a marijuana garden in the hills above campus and arrested two suspects, authorities said today.

The plants were found at about 2:20 p.m. Monday off Grizzly Peak Boulevard in the Berkeley hills, authorities said.

Further investigation led to the arrests Wednesday of Jose Diazmendez, 45, and Jose M. Diaz, III, 20, neither of whom is affiliated with the campus, police said. Both were booked at Berkeley City Jail.

University police said they believed it was one of the first instances in which they found a marijuana garden in the hills above campus. Patrol officers who navigate the winding Grizzly Peak Boulevard said they usually deal with illicit activity in parked cars and car crashes in the hilly ravines.
